This book is a 'guide on efforts to prevent suicide' by the author, who has been involved in suicide prevention work at the non-profit organization, Japanese Association of Mental Health Services, and has dealt with patients as a psychiatrist for more than 50 years.
In Part I, while showing specific examples of 'Signs observed just before a suicide attempt' (BPSAS), the author explains the characteristics seen in people with BPSAS and the three processes that lead to it: 'a case of vicious circle/evolution', 'fluctuation of mental state', and 'psychotic symptoms.' This section provides an overview of the overall picture of the process leading to suicide attempts.
Part II describes how anyone can become a powerful 'gatekeeper' (a person who can notice signs of suicide risk in others and take relevant action), including 'How to respond', 'Suicide risk assessment', 'How to act as a gatekeeper/how you should borrow the resources of support institutions'.
This 'guide', which brings together in one volume the wealth of knowledge of the author, who has been involved in support projects for approximately 300 people who attempt suicide or are at high risk of suicide each year, is a bible for all those who are involved in suicide prevention as 'gatekeepers'.
